Six Months to Install a Zipper

I finished the knitting and seaming of my Patons Cabled Hoodie (sans hood) back in July.

Then it sat. And sat. And sat. I went out to the local quilt shop and bought a zipper and ribbon and matching thread.

It sat some more.

When I was pulling projects together for temporary housing, I spied the oh-so-close to complete sweater. I tossed it and the zipper, ribbon, thread, and needles in a bag. I figured given a limited set of projects to work on, I may actually sit down and sew the zipper in.

Sure enough:

I finished it, finally.

It’s a “working” sweater. It knit up quickly (it’s just the zipper install that took me so long), it isn’t terribly flattering, but it is something that I know I will get a lot of wear out of.

29 Feb 2008-1 July 2008 (knitting); another six months to finish the zipper install!

It has no shaping and it’s a little short. I opted not to add shaping or lengthen it, but both of those modifications could be worked fairly easily. The pattern was easy, though I had to rip out and redo both sleeve caps because they were too short to set into the armscye properly. My measurements for both the armscye and the sleeve cap matched the pattern schematics, but there was no way to set the sleeve cap into that armscye without ugly things happening.

I also worked an i-cord on both cardigan fronts, to make it neater for setting the zipper in. I am really happy with how this worked out.

So cute!! Mine is a tad short too – I tried to block it longer, but no luck. the color is really nice – a great neutral that will go with everything!

Totally cute. Installing zippers intimidate me so I am amazed at you completing it at all. Awesome job!
