Sweater No. 2: Stranded Star Moon

The second sweater on my mind of late is one I have been musing over for at least a year. This yarn has been marinating in my stash for two years — months before I even learned how to knit! — for a striped crocheted sweater.

I’ve since left the idea of crocheting a striped sweater behind, and moved onto something like this:

This is the basic design, though yes, my proportions are off and no, it won’t have bell sleeves. My problem was that I have 3 hanks of 4 different colors from Beaverslide — three shades of blue plus ecru. This limits the design a bit. I would prefer that the sleeves be the same color as the lower body, but I don’t have the yarn for that. I am currently not sure I will have enough of the dark blue yarn for the body either, but I think it will be fine (they’re 4oz hanks, 241 yards apiece).

However, I think that having the medium blue as the color for the sleeves will work out just fine, both in terms of yarn amounts and in terms of look. The light blue will be used for the contrast hem and cuffs a la EZ.

Here’s a closeup of most of the stranded pattern — there’s a little more to it than this, but this is enough to get the idea:

I think it will work. Stay tuned for my thoughts after swatching…

That’s going to be cute. And I think you’ll definitely have enough dark blue for the body–over 700 yards? No problem.

Of course, now that I’ve said that…

I’ll go knock on some wood.

Yummy denim-y blues. It’s going to look great–I can’t wait to see the colorwork in real yarn.

It sounds like it’s going to be a lovely sweater – I really like the design for the yoke. I’m not sure how I’d feel about the sleeves being a different shade of blue from the body, but do you think if you ordered another skein of the dark blue it’d be close enough, despite the dye lot difference?

And an aside – the Beaverslide Dry Goods yarn is stalking me, I swear! I found the site for the first time last week and now you’re the third or fourth person to mention it since then. I think it’s a hint, I need the yarn NOW, especially if it’s as yummy as everyone says it is.

Ooo, ooo, ooo. LOVE that yarn and those colors. The pattern is very cute too. I think a med blue arm is a great idea…its unexpected but well thought out!

Love the shades of blue – perfect with a moon theme! A great fair isle knit with a twist on a not-so-typical fair isle pattern!

Your sketch is great! It looks like a sketch. I like that you consider to sketch with your computer. I’ve been thinking of getting a pen tablet. I was wondering what you thought of it as a part of the creative process?
