“It’s Our Thing”

I visited my mom a couple of weeks ago. While I was there, she had some things of mine that she wanted me to take home with me.

While she cleaned out a shadowbox to give me, I stood there and looked at the pictures hanging at the top of the stairs. I noticed that both of my sisters were wearing Canadian shirts in their senior pictures — K was wearing a Montréal Canadiens shirt and M was wearing a Canada shirt. I pointed that coincidence out to Mom and she said, “Yeah, it’s our thing” — my family has a thing for Canada!

I’m no exception to this [though I also have a thing for Russia (and all of the former Soviet nations)]! So when I saw the Regia Canadian Fashion Color sock yarn, I had to have some!

I decided that I would order two balls. A ball of the Winnipeg colorway for my favorite Winnipeg native, and a ball of Vancouver for me.

[aside: why the heck did they charge Ms. Noricum duty?! I shipped the same way I always ship to Canada and it was a gift -- they've never charged any of my recipients duty before! I hate that, it's like "here, pay this, then you can have your package." GRR. It's a gift! Waaa. ]

[aside again: In taking this picture I realized I may not have pulled the price tag off of the ball I sent A. Oops. Lame. I doubly suck! ]

Vancouver is my second favorite Canadian city that I have been to — second only to Thunder Bay, Ontario (not that I’ve been there in something like 20 years). When we lived in Seattle, DH (in the pre-DH days) and I used to take weekend trips to Vancouver. Those are some of my favorite memories. I love that city and I miss living close enough to go visit regularly.

Until I move closer, I will survive by making myself a pair of lovely, stripey, Vancouver socks. You know, sometime after I’ve finished some of my other sock pairs in progress…

[yet another aside: If you're in Canada, you can order this yarn from Mary Maxim! For some reason the colorway names are different there than on the German sites -- they removed the city names, and only used territories and provinces (but dissed Nunavut). I really want Calgary and Ontario, but I will resist for now.]

Thank you so much for the yarn! I’m sure I’ll get the duty back, so don’t worry about it. I wonder why they think Winnipeg is so grey and brown? Well, you’ll just have to come visit me so I can prove otherwise. ;)

PS: I didn’t notice a price tag, so either you got it, mine didn’t have one, or I’m blind.
